About the role We are building a higher education researcher motion that helps funded labs adopt OpenAI across core research workflows. This role will develop relationships with principal investigators, researchers, research software engineers, research computing teams, and university technology leaders, then translate high-value use cases into sustained Pro, Codex, API, and ChatGPT Edu usage. This is a hybrid business development and program management role. You will identify and qualify priority labs, design phased access and fellows programs, run pilots, remove technical and institutional blockers, and create repeatable paths from individual researchers to lab- and institution-level adoption. Additionally, this role will launch and manage a community of researchers with events, communications and support. In this role, you will: Build a pipeline of funded labs, research centers, and technical champions at priority R1 universities; qualify opportunities based on workflow value, funding path, influence, and expansion potential. Run discovery with researchers and university stakeholders to understand workflows, data and security needs, procurement constraints, and success criteria. Design and operate phased access and fellows programs, including eligibility, selection, offer mechanics, onboarding, office hours, community programming, and pilot goals. Translate research workflows into effective use of Pro, Codex, API, and ChatGPT Edu in partnership with Solutions, Product, and Education account teams. Manage pilots end to end, remove trust, funding, and technical blockers, and drive measurable activation, retention, and expansion. Turn early usage into product feedback, workflow documentation, peer proof, case studies, and repeatable enablement. Build clear handoffs and expansion paths from researcher to lab to institution; track fellow selection, activation, retained usage, workflow proof, conversion, and expansion. About the Team OpenAI’s Business organization works with customers and partners on some of our most complex and consequential opportunities. These efforts require rigorous strategy, strong operating leadership, and coordinated execution across commercial, product, technical, deployment, and go-to-market teams. About the Role We are hiring a Business Lead to serve as the operating leader for a strategically important initiative anchored in a major partnership. This person will turn an ambitious, cross-functional mandate into a clear strategy, operating plan, decision structure, and set of measurable outcomes. This role combines strategy and operations, product judgment, commercial skills, and the ability to get things done. You will identify the most promising product and customer opportunities, develop a point of view on how our products should work together, shape the commercial approach, and personally drive execution across both organizations. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to own outcomes, not just coordinate work. You will structure ambiguous problems, establish priorities, build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and work across product, engineering, deployment, and go-to-market teams to remove blockers and deliver results. Success means establishing a durable operating model for the initiative, improving decision velocity, translating strategy into coordinated execution, launching a joint go-to-market motion, landing an initial cohort of customers, and delivering a high-quality enterprise deployment. In this role, you will: Own the initiative’s integrated strategy and operating plan, including priorities, desired outcomes, metrics, owners, dependencies, and decision points Structure complex and ambiguous business problems, develop fact-based recommendations, and translate them into clear choices and executable plans Define success measures and build operating reviews that surface progress, risks, tradeoffs, and requi

Identify recurring needs across our internal AI community and translate them into clear requirements for the Smart AI roadmap. Execute against the existing Smart AI roadmap by building and improving reusable journeys, skills, templates, system instructions, and other paved paths. Contribute directly to infrastructure enhancements that make internal AI development easier, more reliable, and more consistent. Build alongside users when useful, using tools like Claude Code and other AI-assisted development workflows to prototype solutions and validate new approaches. Help improve the dedicated development environment employees use for vibe coding, including integrations, connectors, APIs, model access, and supporting infrastructure. Turn one-off que

About Us: AI needs a new infrastructure layer. We're building it at Modal. Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now. Our customers include category-defining companies like Lovable , Ramp , Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale. We recently raised a $355M Series C at a $4.65B valuation, led by General Catalyst and Redpoint Ventures. We've crossed $300M+ ARR and grown fivefold since September. Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g., Seaborn , Luig i ), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience. The Role We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team of highly experienced engineers building the infrastructure that powers Modal's serverless GPU platform. This is a hands-on leadership role — expect to split your time between technical contribution and people management depending on what the team needs. You'll set direction, remove blockers, and build a strong engineering culture as your team tackles hard problems in distributed computing, large-scale data handling, and performance optimization. Who You Are You're an experienced engineering leader who stays close to the work and builds alongside your team when it counts. You earn trust through technical depth, not title. You communicate clearly, help strong engineers move fast without cutting corners, and stay calm and pragmatic under pressure. You care as much about how your team gets to an answer as the answ
