About the Role We are seeking a Principal Backend Engineer (P5) to serve as the technical leader and compass for our newly established engineering pod in India. Operating at the intersection of identity, networking, and security infrastructure , you will be responsible for tackling highly complex, vaguely specified problems without day-to-day oversight. In this role, you will champion the technical execution of your team. You will lead the design and implementation of secure database and network device connectors (routers, switches, firewalls) on top of our core Zero Standing Privileges (ZSP) platform. You will work closely with our local Technical Team Lead to mentor mid-level engineers, while collaborating closely with global Tech Leads to ensure architectural alignment. We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to work on our next-generation Imports Platform team. Imports Platform team is leading a strategic initiative to modernize Okta's identity lifecycle management capabilities by architecting and migrating from a legacy monolithic system to a highly scalable, distributed microservices platform. This critical service orchestrates the importing, syncing, and provisioning of identities and access policies—users, groups, roles, entitlements—from external directory services including Active Directory, Office 365, and LDAP-based systems. As a Principal Software Engineer on the Imports Platform team, you will be a cross-team technical leader who takes difficult, ambiguously defined problems and drives them from ideation through production impact without oversight. You will own projects from zero to landing—defining scope, planning execution, making architectural decisions, and articulating measurable impact across the group. You will generate novel solutions to complex distributed systems challenges, guide the team's technical direction, and get stakeholder buy-in on architectural strategy spanning multiple teams. Role Overview You’ll be the Principal Software Engineer driving the next generation of a large-scale enterprise SaaS platform. In this role, you combine deep hands-on engineering with high-impact technical leadership, shaping how cloud-native and AI-enabled products are designed and built. You’ll design and deliver secure, scalable, serverless systems on AWS using TypeScript and Node.js, modernize critical platform components, and set the technical direction for multiple teams.
