Applied Scientist

At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive. The Lyft Rider Science team is seeking an Applied Scientist intern to develop next-generation user simulation methods using state of the art AI methods. The goal of this project is to develop and validate LLM-based Rider Agents that can serve as behavioral proxies for real riders, and study when agent simulations can provide reliable signal about rider responses to product interventions before online experimentation. You will build agent-based simulation systems grounded in real rider context and behavioral data, evaluate their fidelity against observed rider behavior and historical experiments, and study where these simulations can accelerate product iteration and experimentation. This role combines LLM engineering, agent-based modeling, machine learning, and causal inference with direct applications to real-world rider products. The expected outcome is to build a working Rider Agent simulation prototype, establish an evaluation framework for measuring simulation fidelity and validate the framework using historical rider experiments. Responsibilities: Develop LLM-based Rider Agents that represent heterogeneous rider contexts, preferences, histories, and behaviors Build agent-based simulation environments for evaluating rider interactions with different product experiences and interventions Build evaluation pipelines to assess realism, robustness, and mechanism plausibility of simulated behavior against human data or established theory Analyze emergent behaviors and interaction dynamics in simulated populations under different user segment and marketplace conditions Conduct experiments and ablation studies on agent behavior, interaction dynamics, and simulation validity Apply the simulation framework to real Rider product problems and assess its usefulness for hypothesis generation, product iteration

About Glean: Glean is the Work AI platform that helps everyone work smarter with AI. What began as the industry’s most advanced enterprise search has evolved into a full-scale Work AI ecosystem, powering intelligent Search, an AI Assistant, and scalable AI agents on one secure, open platform. With over 100 enterprise SaaS connectors, flexible LLM choice, and robust APIs, Glean gives organizations the infrastructure to govern, scale, and customize AI across their entire business - without vendor lock-in or costly implementation cycles. At its core, Glean is redefining how enterprises find, use, and act on knowledge. Its Enterprise Graph and Personal Knowledge Graph map the relationships between people, content, and activity, delivering deeply personalized, context-aware responses for every employee. This foundation powers Glean’s agentic capabilities - AI agents that automate real work across teams by accessing the industry’s broadest range of data: enterprise and world, structured and unstructured, historical and real-time. The result: measurable business impact through faster onboarding, hours of productivity gained each week, and smarter, safer decisions at every level. Recognized by Fast Company as one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies (Top 10, 2025), by CNBC’s Disruptor 50, Bloomberg’s AI Startups to Watch (2026), Forbes AI 50, and Gartner’s Tech Innovators in Agentic AI, Glean continues to accelerate its global impact. With customers across 50+ industries and 1,000+ employees in more than 25 countries, we’re helping the world’s largest organizations make every employee AI-fluent, and turning the superintelligent enterprise from concept into reality. If you’re excited to shape how the world works, you’ll help build systems used daily across Microsoft Teams, Zoom, ServiceNow, Zendesk, GitHub, and many more. You'll be deeply embedded where people get things done. You'll ship agentic capabilities on an open, extensible stack, with

About the team The Growth team drives user and revenue growth across ChatGPT’s consumer and business segments and other OpenAI products worldwide. We work across the full funnel—from awareness and acquisition through activation, retention, and expansion—using experimentation, data science, machine learning, and product engineering to help more people discover and realize durable value from OpenAI’s products. Our team partners closely with Product, Engineering, Data Science, Design, Finance, Lifecycle, and Growth Marketing. We move quickly, test rigorously, and hold a high bar for measurement, privacy, reliability, and user trust. About this role: We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to build the models and decision systems that optimize paid marketing investment for ChatGPT and other OpenAI products. You will develop budget allocation and control algorithms that determine where to invest, how quickly to spend, and how to adjust as performance changes. The challenge is to make reliable decisions from noisy, delayed, and incomplete signals. You will combine machine learning, optimization, and experimentation to improve incremental growth and long-term user value within budget and efficiency constraints. You will own this work from problem formulation and prototyping through deployment, evaluation, and ongoing operation. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to eligible employees. In this role, you will: Build budget allocation algorithms. Decide how to distribute investment across channels, campaigns, and markets using estimates of marginal returns, while accounting for diminishing returns, uncertainty, and business constraints. Develop spend pacing and adaptive control systems. Adjust budgets and spending rates as performance changes, balancing responsiveness with stability when feedback is delayed or noisy. Build in spend limits, monitoring, and safe fallback

Who are we? Cohere is the leading security-first enterprise AI company. We build cutting-edge foundation AI models and end-to-end products that are designed to solve real-world business problems. We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that. We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft. We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us! Why This Role Is Different This is not a typical “Applied Scientist” or “ML Engineer” role. As a Member of Technical Staff, Applied ML, you will: Work directly with enterprise customers on problems that push LLMs to their limits. You’ll rapidly understand customer domains, design custom LLM solutions, and deliver production-ready models that solve high-value, real-world problems. Train and customize frontier models — not just use APIs. You’ll leverage Cohere’s full stack: CPT, post-training, retrieval + agent integrations, model evaluations, and SOTA modeling techniques. Influence the capabilities of Cohere’s foundation models. Techniques, datasets, evaluations, and insights you develop for customers will directly shape the next generation of Cohere’s frontier models. Operate with an early-startup level of ownership inside a frontier-model company. This role combines the breadth of an early-stage CTO with the infrastructure and scale of a deep-learning lab. Wear multiple hats, set a high technical bar, and define what Applied ML at Cohere becomes. Few roles in the industry combine application, research, customer-facing engineeri
