Applied AI is where Datadog's ambitious AI bets get built and shipped ( Bits Chat , updog ). We sit at the intersection of research and product: turning promising capabilities from Datadog AI Research lab and the research community into production systems that reach real customers. The team builds specialized models that replace frontier models where they are not necessary, making AI capabilities faster, cheaper, and more secure. The mandate is to move fast from idea to customer impact, and when a product finds its footing, to set it up for growth. As a Manager I in Applied AI, you will lead a team of engineers and applied scientists working on one of these challenges. You will define technical direction, run short feedback loops, make deliberate decisions about what to pursue or stop, and work closely with product managers, research teams, and cross-functional partners to ship AI capabilities that matter. What You'll Do Lead and develop a team of engineers and applied scientists focused on cost-efficient specialized models and AI security capabilities Work closely with product managers, research teams, and cross-functional partners to shape the team's bets from initial framing through to broader adoption, with a clear definition of success criteria at each stage Own end-to-end delivery of high-quality AI systems, from early research exploration to production-grade reliability, with high standards for operational excellence, system reliability, and technical quality Navigate the unique challenges of shipping AI-powered products: balancing quality, latency, cost, and safety considerations. Datadog’s Product Analytics suite spans Product Analytics, Session Replay, Feature Flags, and Experimentation. Together they give product teams a complete, quantitative and qualitative picture of how users experience their applications, plus the tools to release, measure, and improve those experiences with confidence. Our team of Applied Scientists makes this space smarter and more autonomous, researching, prototyping, and industrializing AI/ML capabilities that make the suite proactive and agentic by default: AI-driven event understanding and instrumentation, conversational analytics, automated insight reporting, and UI/UX issue detection from session replays. As the Engineering Manager for this team, you’ll lead a team of Applied Scientists through an early-stage, high-impact opportunity: defining the team’s technical vision, growing its footprint, and shaping how AI capabilities get built and delivered across the suite. AI Platform builds the foundations of Datadog's AI efforts. The org is 70+ people organised in three pillars: training and serving (GPU clusters, distributed training, low-level infrastructure), agents (agent harnesses, memory systems, the internal AI gateway that routes every LLM request at Datadog), and evaluation and experimentation. This role sits in the evaluation and experimentation pillar, which owns Datadog's shared annotation and evaluation infrastructure — including the evaluation scenario store and the telemetry archival systems used across the Bits org. Together they let an agent travel back in time and query what Datadog looked like at the exact moment an incident happened, so scenarios can be replayed and agent performance tracked over time. Specifically, you'll be the first applied scientist on GenSim (Generative Simulations), the team that builds the environments Datadog's agents learn in. GenSim doesn't replay sampled telemetry — it stands up real, fully instrumented applications that talk to Datadog, drives them with representative traffic, injects controlled failures, and records what happens. Because GenSim injected the failure, it knows the ground truth. That corpus — hundreds of postmortem-derived scenarios and thousands of runnable applications — is today the primary source of post-training data for Datadog's own SRE model, and the substrate that Bits AI SRE and our other agents are trained and evaluated against. The team has no applied science support today and is learning post-training data methodology on the fly. That's the gap this role fills, and the open questions are the interesting part. How do you tell whether a generated environment is actually representative of the messy, incomplete telemetry real customers run — rather than a suspiciously clean one where every monitor exists and every service emits complete logs? How do you make injected problems genuinely hard, and how do you even measure difficulty? How do you define and control
