About the role Lab37 is hiring an industrial engineer specializing in discrete-event simulation to optimize robotic food-production systems. You will model end-to-end production flow (including equipment, labor, material movement, queues, capacity, and operating policies) to identify bottlenecks, evaluate system designs, and guide capital and operational decisions. Beginning with our Bowl Builder and expanding across the full kitchen, your models will help teams understand tradeoffs and make confident decisions about what to build next. You will own the technical direction for industrial-engineering simulation at Lab37, including choosing tools, setting modeling standards, conducting time studies, characterizing empirical inputs, validating models against operating data, and integrating simulation into product and operations planning. Working closely with our hardware, robotics, and operations teams in Pittsburgh, you will turn complex physical systems into trusted decision-making tools. This is a senior/staff-level individual contributor role with the opportunity to establish a capability central to how Lab37 designs, tests, deploys, and operates its systems. About the role Work with a team to understand the contents of the larger system. Take on the ownership of a hardware module, understand, develop and improve upon its requirements. Create CAD and all documentation required for its development, build, and testing. Be detail-oriented and demonstrate a sense of pride in your work. What you’ll do Design and develop mechanical systems for robotic applications, ensuring functionality, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability. Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and assembly instructions. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software developers, and product managers, to integrate mechanical designs with electronic and software components. Conduct hands-on prototype building and testing, analyzing performance data to iterate on designs. Utilize a variety of manufacturing processes and materials to optimize designs for performance and efficiency. What you’ll do As a Hardware Test Engineer at Lab37 Robotics, you will design, execute, and automate tests that prove out our system per NSF requirements and are reliable, and durable in real kitchens. You’ll translate food safety standard and operational best practices into clear test requirements, build fixtures and rigs (often with Raspberry Pi/Arduino or similar), and instrument systems with temperature, humidity, and other environmental sensors. Your work will uncover failure modes, validate component lifecycles, and drive design improvements that elevate product quality and guest experience. Responsibilities Convert food safety and regulatory requirements into testable specifications, acceptance criteria, and traceable test plans/protocols. Design and build test fixtures/rigs using Raspberry Pi/Arduino (or similar) for sensor logging, control, and automation. Execute environmental, thermal, humidity, ingress, cleaning/chemical exposure, wear/abrasion, and lifecycle/MTBF tests; analyze results and document findings. Develop automated data-logging and reporting for temperature/humidity profiles, duty cycles, etc. Run component and subsystem endurance testing (motors, augers, valves, seals, electronics) to characterize failure modes and recommend design or supplier changes.
