THE ROLE As a Software Engineer at Baseten, you will own one of the most critical surfaces of our business: pricing, billing, and revenue infrastructure. As we launch more and more products— billing is no longer just operational plumbing. It is a strategic lever for growth. This role will establish clear ownership of billing as a function and create leverage for Finance, Sales, and GTM teams while maintaining a seamless customer experience. RESPONSIBILITIES Own Baseten’s end-to-end billing and revenue infrastructure, including pricing, invoicing, metering, and reporting foundations. Build and evolve our billing platform and integrations (including Orb), ensuring correctness, auditability, and a high-trust experience for customers and internal teams. Partner closely with Finance, Sales, GTM, and Forward Deployed Engineering to turn real-world workflows into reliable internal tooling and automation (quoting, approvals, renewals, usage reconciliation, revenue reporting). Design systems that scale with new products, packaging, and go-to-market motions, making billing a strategic lever for growth. What Is The Role : Billing powers Elastic's Cloud business. It runs across AWS, GCP, and Azure in over 50 regions. We oversee usage-based metering, consumption billing, and marketplace integrations at global scale. The Billing Core team owns the data layer that makes billing correct, auditable, and automated. We work across two areas: Usage — Collect and process usage and cost data. This data is the foundation of our billing and financial reporting. Engine — Turn hourly usage data into customer invoices and revenue records. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to drive technical direction within the Billing Core domain. This is a hands-on role. You will design systems, improve how we operate, and work across teams. You will help our billing services grow in scale, reliability, and developer productivity. This team powers key business functions spanning the CFO org and aids at strategic decision-making. As a Software Engineer, you'll design and build the backend services, integrations, and workflow engines that keep the foundational financial operations running. Often you will focus on transforming complex financial requirements into scalable technology solutions — with a specific emphasis on AI enablement. We are an AI-driven engineering team — we use agentic coding tools across our entire development lifecycle, from design exploration through implementation and review, and we expect every engineer to do the same. About the Job: Software powers the world, and LaunchDarkly empowers teams to deliver and control it safely. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Billing team, you will own the systems that turn every plan, price, entitlement, and usage limit into revenue — checkout, subscription and entitlement APIs, usage metering, and the integrations to our billing, CRM, and finance systems. When billing is wrong, customers get the wrong product and we invoice the wrong amount. Correctness here is a commitment to our customers, not a nice-to-have. You and your team will drive the modernization of our billing platform. Technologies include Go, TypeScript, Postgres, AWS, and Terraform. Exact tool match matters far less than deep backend judgment and a track record of safely changing systems that are not allowed to be wrong. Responsibilities: Design and build the systems that define our plans, pricing, entitlements, and limits, and expose them through our API. Decompose billing from our monolith into services that are correct, testable, and independently deployable. Own correctness end to end — usage metering, reconciliation, and the invoices and usage data customers see. Operate what you build: SLOs, alerting, on-call, and fixing root causes rather than repeating mitigations. Qualifications: 6+ years of professional software-engineering experience, with significant work on complex backend applications. Experience decomposing a monolith A track record on systems where correctness is non-negotiable, and the habits that come with it: idempotency, reconciliation, reversible migrations, and safe cutovers. Proficiency in at least one backend language (Go, Rust, Python, etc.) and familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or equivalent), plus strong production ownership including on-call.
