Datadog’s Cloud Observability group is one of the core data retrieval and processing groups powering our foundational product, Infrastructure Monitoring. The group’s scope includes integration with all major hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI), as well as both regional and GPU-specific cloud providers. As Director, you will own engineering for all clouds, generating more than 10 million metric points per second, managing ~40 engineers through a team of Engineering Managers. You’ll partner with Senior Directors and product leadership to shape the roadmap, not just execute against it, managing the growth of one of Datadog’s foundational teams. At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships that it builds, the creativity it brings to the table, and the collaboration of being together. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our employees can create a work-life harmony that best fits them. What You'll Do: Own engineering for all of Cloud Observability Manage ~40 engineers through a layer of Engineering Managers; this is a manager-of-managers role Shape the roadmap alongside product leadership rather than simply executing against it — push back on, iterate on, and help author the strategy for your area Drive AI adoption across the engineering org, from tooling and workflows to product features and team practices Navigate cross-team dependencies across the Agent, Telemetry Onboarding, Integrations, Action Platform, and Infrastructure Monitoring. Build and retain engineering talent in NYC, Boston, and Paris, mentor Engineering Managers toward Director readiness, and participate in the on-call rotation Who You Are: You have directly managed Engineering Managers, not just individual contributors You have deep experience with one or more cloud providers, ideally with experience operating large-scale systems in the cloud. About the Team API Agents builds the shared agent harness, tools, and infrastructure that turn OpenAI’s frontier models into systems that can reliably complete real work. We carry the capabilities behind Codex into a much broader set of products and workflows across software engineering, research, finance, healthcare, enterprise operations, and more. Our work spans search and connected context, computer use, memory, delegation and multi-agent coordination, and safe execution. Sitting at the intersection of Research, Codex, infrastructure, and applied product teams, we build reusable agent capabilities that compound across the ecosystem. About the Role We are looking for an experienced backend software engineer to build the core systems behind the next generation of agents. You will design reliable services and abstractions that help agents find the right context, use tools and computers, retain knowledge, coordinate over long-running workflows, and take action safely. The role combines deep backend and infrastructure work with strong product judgment, with opportunities to work across agent runtimes, orchestration, search, execution environments, identity and permissions, observability, and evaluations. This is software and systems engineering rather than model training: success comes from strong backend fundamentals, high agency, and the ability to turn fast-moving research capabilities into dependable production primitives. In this role, you will: Design, build, and operate the shared agent harness and backend infrastructure that power long-running, high-value workflows across OpenAI and third-party products. Build reusable capabilities across search and connected context, computer use, memory, tool execution, delegation, subagents, and multi-agent orchestration. Establish the foundations agents need to operate safely in production, including secure execution environments, identity and permissions, observability, evaluations, reliability, and cost and latency effi
About the Team The Finance & Supply Chain Engineering organization includes two complementary teams. Software Engineering builds internal full-stack applications, durable agentic workflows, plugins, MCPs, and measurable AI-enabled engineering practices. Data Engineering builds trusted analytics data assets for Finance and Supply Chain. The teams have distinct charters, with important shared dependencies and broad cross team partnerships across Engineering, Applications, Finance, and Supply Chain. About the Role We are looking for a hands-on senior technical leader who will report alongside the Software Engineering and Data Engineering managers. This is an individual-contributor role with no immediate people-management responsibility. The Tech Lead will raise the technical bar across both teams, participate in important cross-team or high-risk design decisions, and directly own and ship high-impact work. The role should improve team judgment and autonomy rather than act as a floating architect or universal approval gate. In this role, you will: Partner with the Software Engineering and Data Engineering managers as a peer technical leader; managers retain accountability for people, staffing, priorities, performance, and delivery commitments. Directly own the architecture, implementation, launch, and operation of one or more high-impact initiatives, remaining accountable for real outcomes rather than advisory output alone. Guide important design decisions that are cross-team, difficult to reverse, or material to security, financial controls, reliability, data quality, or long-term cost of ownership. Establish pragmatic engineering standards across architecture, APIs and data contracts, testing, security, reliability, observability, lineage, data quality, and operational ownership. Advance engineering standards for building with AI, including agentic workflows, evaluation, telemetry, adoption, and outcome measurement. Work across backend, full-stack, data, and big-d
