About the Role We are hiring a Product Manager to focus on risk related to multimodal models. In this role, you will drive initiatives which ensure that OpenAI’s audio, image, and video deployments are safe, impactful, and aligned with user needs and technical innovation. You will clarify strategic priorities, develop safety-focused product roadmaps, and collaborate closely with AI researchers, software engineers, policy experts, and cross-functional partners. This role suits a proactive, technically skilled product manager adept at adversarial thinking and excited to tackle challenging, ambiguous problems through structured analysis and collaborative decision-making. This position is based in San Francisco, CA, with relocation assistance available. In this role, you will: Partner closely with AI research, engineering, data science, policy teams, and other stakeholders to embed safety throughout the development and deployment of multimodal AI models - such as GPT-Live and ChatGPT Images - as well as multimodal capabilities in frontier AI models. What you'll do The agent must collect and use a card number but can never see it. This work sits across four hard technical domains: payments, security, real-time voice, and LLMs. Voice is the core challenge. A caller speaks or types a card number in a live, low-latency audio stream, and the digits must never reach the model, while the model stays on the call. Sierra owns every system that touches card data, and one small team owns it end to end across three workstreams: Platform, Product, and Safety & Integrity. Customers keep their own telephony and payment gateways. Payments is live in production for some of the largest consumer enterprises, on a platform that handles hundreds of millions of calls a year. About the Team API Multimodal builds the developer-facing products and infrastructure that bring OpenAI’s image, audio, and real-time model capabilities into the world. We are responsible for high-scale multimodal APIs, including image generation and Live API . We partner closely with Research and Inference to bring frontier model capabilities to developers and use customer feedback to improve our models. About the Role As a software engineer on API Multimodal, you will build and operate the products and distributed systems behind OpenAI’s image, audio, and real-time APIs. You will work across model integration, API design, and production infrastructure to turn new research capabilities into reliable developer experiences. This hands-on role combines backend and systems depth with product judgment: you will own projects end to end, partner with Research, Inference, and Safety, and help make multimodal AI useful at scale. Model training experience is not required. In this role, you will: Design, build, and ship developer-facing APIs and backend services that serve frontier models. Architect low-latency streaming, request, session, and model integration systems that make complex multimodal interactions reliable and intuitive at scale. Work directly with Research to bring new model capabilities into production, shape the systems around them, and incorporate feedback from real-world developers and customers.
