This role focuses on advancing the science and systems behind ML measurement, feature understanding, and causal inference at scale. The work spans areas such as production feature importance platforms, observational causal estimation in Pytorch, large-scale proxy metric development, and data-driven approaches to ML infrastructure efficiency. We're looking for an enthusiastic individual contributor to perform high-impact technical work across this space. This person will drive foundational innovations, own the end-to-end design of production ML systems, establish rigorous methodological standards, and partner cross-functionally to turn successful research into durable platform capabilities that raise the ceiling for the entire ML organization. ABOUT THE ROLE: The X Search team is responsible for building and operating the core search engine that powers discovery on X. We own the full end-to-end search stack — from real-time retrieval and indexing to ranking and the end-user search experience. Our goal is to create the most relevant, fast, and intelligent search experience on the internet by combining state-of-the-art information retrieval systems with Grok’s reasoning capabilities. ABOUT THE ROLE: The Data Platform team builds and operates the infrastructure responsible for all large-scale data transport and processing across the company. We own and manage core systems including Apache Kafka, HDFS, Spark, Flink, and Trino, enabling real-time ML pipelines, feed ranking, experimentation, analytics, and observability at petabyte scale. Our team deals with latency-critical workloads, high-throughput streaming, and distributed compute systems that require fault tolerance, performance, and absolute reliability. As a software engineer on the Data Platform team, you will design, build, and operate the distributed systems powering SpaceXSI's data movement and compute. You will take ownership of infrastructure components that process trillions of events daily, driving the scalability, performance, and reliability of the systems that power product and ML workloads across the company. RESPONSIBILITIES: Scale synthetic coding data to trillions of tokens with large-scale docker verification. Distill the intelligence of flagship models into flash models through synthetic data generation. Optimize mid-training data mixtures to boost the ceiling for RL. Engineer long-context data recipes. Develop robust and diverse evaluation for mid-training checkpoints. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Expertise in ML and large model scaling, with familiarity across all kinds of scaling laws. Strong ability to design ML experiments. Familiarity with state-of-the-art techniques for curating AI training data for text, image, audio, and video modalities. Strong engineering abilities in Spark, Ray, and other frameworks for large-scale data processing.
