About the role We're seeking an exceptional Research Scientist to join the team. As a founding member of Life Sciences, you'll work in a high-impact group that operates at the intersection of computational and experimental biology. You'll help establish Anthropic as a leader in biology research while developing product intuition through direct engagement with the challenges and opportunities of laboratory science. Key responsibilities Design, execute, and iterate on the experimental programs at the core of the team's research: molecular biology, biochemistry, protein and nucleic acid characterization, high-throughput functional screens, and the assay development that makes new questions answerable Partner directly with computational biologists to design experiments that produce high-quality, analysis-ready data, and feed results back fast enough to immediately inform the next round of analysis Generate and prioritize hypotheses by combining your experimental judgment with the literature, curated biological knowledge bases, and the team's computational predictions Use Claude and our internal agent frameworks heavily in your own work — for experimental planning, protocol development, and data interpretation — and feed what you learn back to the model-improvement and product teams as evaluations, datasets, and concrete failure cases Minimum qualification

About the role Anthropic's Life Sciences team is building a research group focused on biological discoveries by combining AI with hands-on biological research. We're seeking research scientists with deep medicinal chemistry expertise to join the team. Our goal is to speed up progress in the life sciences by an order of magnitude, and this role puts that mission into practice. You'll be an expert medicinal chemist with hands-on experience designing, synthesizing, purifying, and characterizing small molecules. Above all, you'll close the loop between AI-generated hypotheses and experimental data to share with the community. Working alongside AI researchers and engineers, you'll drive experimental programs end to end and pressure-test AI-designed molecules and AI-proposed synthetic routes against real chemistry. This role is fully on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area. About the role We are looking for research engineers to build the safety and oversight mechanisms that govern how our models handle biological knowledge. As a bio safety researcher, you will spend your time: designing and running capability evaluations against frontier models, generating and curating training data for our safety classifiers, training and iterating on those classifiers alongside our ML engineers, and measuring how they hold up against adversarial pressure in production traffic. This work sits at the intersection of applied ML and biosecurity. You will help define what responsible AI safety looks like in the biological domain, translating threat models into evals, datasets, and deployed systems. The core technical tension you will own is precision: safeguards need to be robust against sophisticated actors while staying out of the way of the far larger population of legitimate researchers using Claude to accelerate life sciences work. Getting that tradeoff right is an empirical problem, and you will be the person measuring it. You do not need to be an ML researcher today. We are hiring a manager to lead the research engineering team responsible for biological safety: the evaluations, datasets, and classifiers that govern how our models handle biological knowledge.
