Senior Staff / Principal Machine Learning Engineer - Autonomy Behaviors

Zoox is on an ambitious journey to develop a full-stack autonomous robotaxi solution, and freeways are the next frontier. We are looking for a Senior Staff or Principal Software Engineer who has played a significant role in removing the driver from an autonomous vehicle operating on freeways, and who can help Zoox navigate that same journey. You will bring deep technical expertise in a relevant autonomy domain — the specific domain is flexible — along with the hard-won judgment that comes from having taken a freeway driving program from supervised operation to driverless. This is a highly visible role with broad influence across the Autonomy organization. In this role, you will: Guide autonomy-wide initiatives toward driverless freeway operation, including setting the technical vision and strategy, building the roadmap, and driving cross-functional execution Identify the highest-risk gaps between our current freeway capabilities and driver-out readiness, and lead the engineering work to close them Develop algorithms that enable freeway driving capabilities, spanning architecture, design, implementation, integration, testing, and verification and validation Communicate technical trade-offs, risk assessments, and readiness recommendations to diverse stakeholders, including senior and executive leadership Mentor engineers across the freeway program and raise the bar for how we design, test, and validate high-speed autonomous driving Qualifications: 10+ years of industry software experience Demonstrated technical leadership of removing the human driver from an autonomous vehicle operating on freeways or highways Deep technical expertise in at least one autonomy domain, such as behavior/motion planning, perception, prediction, simulation, or systems engineering Proven ability to

The Vehicle Program team ensures that this groundbreaking vehicle meets its high-performance targets while remaining on time, within budget, and to a very high-quality standard. Reporting to the Director of Vehicle Program Management, the Vehicle Program Manager will be responsible for program management and delivery of future vehicle programs within Zoox. This role serves as the technical and program lead. You will be responsible for high-impact decisions, both technical and strategic. On the Motion Planning team at Zoox, you’ll be dedicated to improving the driving behaviors of the robot on public roads. The Planner's job is to figure out where the robot is going and how to get there safely in situations as complex as those found in Downtown San Francisco or on the Las Vegas Strip. This is a cutting-edge problem, which requires teamwork and collaboration across a broad set of experts spanning Planner, Perception, Prediction, Operations, and more. Together, you will create the next generation of algorithmic improvements to expand our robot’s ability to drive in some of the most complex situations found on public roads. Safety is foundational at Zoox, so you will take a measured approach – develop a principled modification to the Planner, test in simulation and on closed courses, and team up with our safety drivers for on-road testing. In this role, you will: Create principled algorithmic improvements to specific areas of driving behavior and implement those changes in our code base. Use our extensive backend tooling to test your changes across many different driving situations at the press of a button. Lead on-vehicle drive reviews to generate actionable feedback on driving performance. Use this experience to help the team learn and make improvements. The Program Management Office (PMO) at Zoox is responsible for driving cross-functional program planning and execution at the highest level. We partner with leaders from across the company in vehicle development, system design, software engineering, manufacturing, fleet operations, and business functions to develop and deliver major corporate milestones on the path to launch, and beyond. Our program managers contribute to the end to end success of technical, integrated product milestones involving both of our vehicle platforms - the Toyota Highlander test fleet and Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi.
