The UK is making a wholesale shift to AI. The government's AI Opportunities Action Plan set out to "mainline AI into the veins" of the country, and the focus has now moved to delivery: the Incubator for AI ( i.AI ) is shipping tools like the Humphrey suite into departments, a Sovereign AI Unit and AI Growth Zones are being stood up, and civilian departments are under real pressure to move from pilots to production. Scale can play a foundational role in building the reliable AI applications that shift depends on. We're looking for someone to lead that work in central government. This isn’t about staying in the office and managing a team of sales people, its about building the business from the front. You'd own our commercial relationships across civilian departments, starting where the near-term pipeline is strongest: HMRC, DWP, and NHS. This is a critical role reporting directly to the new Public Sector leader. You'd carry a number, win deals yourself, and build a small team behind you as the work grows. It suits someone who has sold into these departments before and knows how they actually make decisions, not just how the org charts look. What you'll do Own our commercial plan and pipeline for UK civilian central government Find, shape, and close deals yourself, from the first conversation through to contract and into delivery Use the relationships you already have across departments like HMRC, DWP, and NHS Work the frameworks, tenders and teaming, and know which route to market is worth the effort and which isn't. Be a credible counterpart to senior civil servants, and turn what they need into work we can deliver Stay close to our product and delivery teams so what we sell is what we build Hire and lead a small team over time, and help shape the wider UK public sector plan with the UK Public Sector Lead What we're looking for You've sold and delivered technology or transformation work to UK civilian central government, either from a vendor or from inside governmen
About Scale Scale builds AI systems for decisions that matter. We started out providing the data and evaluation behind many of the world's leading models, and we still work with the major frontier labs on research and post-training. Today we also build full applications: we take an organisation's own data and expertise, forward deploy alongside their teams, and build the systems they come to rely on, powered by the Scale GenAI Platform. The Role Defence is under pressure to adopt AI at pace. The 2025 Strategic Defence Review and the Defence AI Strategy push for AI to move from experiment to operational capability, Defence Digital and UK Strategic Command are driving digital and data programmes across the department, and the enabling organisations are being asked to field reliable systems, not pilots. Scale wants to play a foundational role in building the dependable AI applications that shift depends on. We're looking for someone to lead that work across UK defence and the national security community. You'd own our commercial relationships across the Ministry of Defence and its enabling organisations - Defence Digital, UK Strategic Command, DE&S, and Dstl - and the broader defence and security customer base. This is a critical role reporting directly to the new Public Sector leader. You'd carry a number, win deals yourself, and build a small team behind you as the work grows. It suits someone who has sold into defence before and knows how it actually makes decisions, not just how the org charts look. What you'll do Own our commercial plan and pipeline for UK defence and security Find, shape, and close deals yourself, from the first conversation through to contract and into delivery Use the relationships you already have across the MOD, Defence Digital, UK Strategic Command, DE&S, Dstl, and the security and intelligence community Work the defence routes to market, and know which are worth the effort and which aren't (the Defence Sourcing Portal, DASA, JOSCAR

The goal of a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Scale is to own how we apply generative AI, agentic AI, computer vision, and reinforcement learning to mission-critical problems in production. Our senior machine learning engineers are handed problems that don't yet have an established approach, they propose the architecture, build it with support from other engineers, and are accountable for whether it holds up in the environments our customers depend on. Our Public Sector Machine Learning team is focused on deploying cutting-edge models to mission-critical government systems through products like Donovan and Thunderforge . Our work spans multiple modalities, with our primary focus on agentic systems built on large language models. We are developing agents that solve complex operational and planning challenges for government partners: agent frameworks that integrate custom retrieval pipelines and production APIs, memory and context-management systems that hold state across long-running tasks, geospatial reasoning over maps and spatial data, and the evaluation tooling that benchmarks and refines agent behavior. We also apply reinforcement learning in targeted places where it earns its keep, and our computer vision work advances evaluation, labeling efficiency, and multimodal model training in support of defense applications. As a Senior MLE, you'll have design authority over a capability area - the final say on the patterns used within your team, and the responsibility to make those patterns work under real constraints: classified environments, limited compute, and correctness requirements that don't bend. You will: Own the design and delivery of agent capabilities end to end - architecture, implementation, and the evaluation that proves they work Define net-new patterns in problem spaces with no established approach, propose them to the wider team, and lead the work to build them Take state of the art models developed internally and from the commu

Scale AI’s Public Sector business is growing quickly as government agencies adopt AI to support critical national security, defense, and public sector missions. We are seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Frontier AI Infrastructure team within Public Sector Engineering. This is a 50/50 role : you'll spend roughly half your time writing and reviewing code, and half your time leading, coaching, and growing a small team of engineers. Your team owns the model inference layer — enabling state-of-the-art models, debugging the latest AI tools, managing networking, debugging latency, and tracking pricing/usage metrics for AI models. You'll lead technical discussions on the frontlines with cloud vendors and customers to deliver on critical contracts and debug platform issues, and you'll partner upstream with Product to catch issues before they break, moving the team from "infra-only debugging" to proactive integration testing. You will: As a manager - 50/50 management and hands on coding experience. Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers — own hiring, onboarding, performance, and career development. Set technical direction and quarterly priorities for the inference layer, and hold the team accountable to delivery on customer and contract commitments. Run the operational rhythm of the team: sprint planning, on-call rotation, incident review, and postmortems. Partner with Product, Program, and Deployed Engineering leadership to translate customer and mission requirements into roadmap. Represent the team in customer engagements and vendor escalations, including with government stakeholders. Design and implement secure, scalable backend systems for Public Sector customers, leveraging Scale's modern cloud-native AI infrastructure. Own services and systems alongside your team, define their long-term health goals, and improve the health of surrounding components.
