Old vs new regime: which is better at 29 LPA?

The old regime only wins if your deductions beyond its ₹50,000 standard deduction (80C, 80D, HRA exemption, home-loan interest and similar) exceed about ₹8,00,000 a year. With the example deductions (₹1,77,400), old-regime tax is ₹6,10,219 a year against ₹4,15,968 in the new regime, so the new regime leaves more in hand.

Why sites show different in-hand numbers for 29 LPA

Calculators disagree because they assume different salary structures, not different tax law. Here is the new-regime monthly in-hand for 29 LPA under each common assumption:

Monthly in-hand for 29 LPA under different assumptions
AssumptionIn-hand a month
Jobiba default: basic 40% of CTC, PF capped at the ₹25,000 wage ceiling₹1,96,155
Basic at 50% of CTC (the labour codes count at least half of pay as wages)₹1,95,356
PF at 12% of the full basic (no ceiling)₹1,81,639
PF capped at the old ₹15,000 ceiling (before 17 September 2026)₹1,98,181
Gratuity paid outside the CTC₹1,99,353
No PF deducted₹2,01,219

Since 21 November 2025 the labour codes treat allowances above half of total pay as wages for PF and gratuity, which is why some calculators use 50% basic. Professional tax is a state levy capped at ₹2,500 a year (Article 276(2) of the Constitution); some states do not levy it. Gratuity is usually paid only after five years of continuous service.
