We ship real systems that run real business processes at scale. Who you are You are an experienced Platform Engineer who owns backend infrastructure end to end. You design multi-tenant, microservices-based systems that other engineering teams build on, and you make deliberate architectural tradeoffs around consistency, latency, scale, and cost. You are comfortable going deep — service mesh internals, database internals, distributed-systems failure modes — and equally comfortable defining the reliability and security contracts an enterprise AI platform depends on. Responsibilities Design, own, and evolve scalable microservices architectures on Kubernetes across GCP, Azure, and AWS, including multi-tenant isolation (namespaces, network policies, per-tenant resource quotas and RBAC). Build core platform and data-plane components in Golang and Python — data ingestion, knowledge-base indexing and vector/graph search, application connectivity, workflow automation, and ML operations — against explicit latency and throughput SLOs. Own service-to-service communication: gRPC/protobuf API contracts, service mesh (Istio/Linkerd), load balancing, retries, timeouts, and circuit breaking. Make and document architectural tradeoffs — p

Every engineer at Ema owns delivery end to end — from understanding the customer's problem to shipping, measuring and supporting it in production — and residents are held to the same bar. You won't be parked on one project: you'll contribute across several avenues, all toward one goal — creating real value and impact for our enterprise customers. Real production work. You work in the production codebase, on real customer problems and real production data. Recent residents have shipped agent harnesses, eval infrastructure, inference-cost reductions, PII redaction, automated QA pipelines and backend service hardening used by enterprise customers. End-to-end ownership. You take work from a problem statement to a shipped, measured result — design, build, test, launch, and the follow-through until it's reliable. Mentorship. Headquartered in Silicon Valley and with offices in London, Bangalore and Vancouver, Ema is at the frontier of what Agentic AI can do in production. We ship real systems that run real business processes at scale. The residency You own one hard problem end to end. You write the proposal, build the system, design the evaluation, ship behind a gate, and finish with a write-up of what turned out to be true, including the parts that didn't work. You'll sit in the production codebase with a senior mentor and real production data. Recent residents have shipped self-improving harnesses, inference-cost work, agent memory, and eval infrastructure. Your project gets scoped with you, not handed to you. The problem space The loop we care about: production traces become data, data becomes training and evaluation, and better agents produce better traces. Projects live somewhere on that loop. Harness and inference-time work. Context engineering, tool and skill design, orchestration, and deciding where extra inference compute actually pays. Self-improvement loops run behind hard fences. Post-training for agents. SFT on curated trajectories, preference optimization, RL on real agent tasks. Reward design where outcomes are verifiable, process vs. outcome supervision, distilling frontier behavior into cheaper models. Environments and rewards. Turning enterprise workflows into training
