We're looking for a staff software engineer to work on how data is queried and who is allowed to see it. Every read in Asana passes through this layer: it resolves what a user is asking for and enforces, on every object, whether that user is permitted to see it. You will help us keep those guarantees correct and fast as our largest customers grow their domains, their permission structures get more intricate, and AI agents become a significant new class of caller. The Query and Access Control team owns the query execution path over the Work Graph and the permissioning model that governs it. As a staff engineer on the team, you will take on our hardest technical problems and drive the work that spans several teams, bringing depth to the design decisions that shape this layer for years. We work closely with other teams in the core infrastructure area to build and retain customer trust in Asana as the platform for their critical workflows. This role is based in our Reykjavik office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. If you're interviewing for this role, your recruiter will share more about the in-office requirements. What you'll achieve Design and implement a query layer over the Work Graph that stays correct and performant as customer domains and permission structures grow Evolve our access control model so that permission checks remain sound, auditable, and fast on every read path Define how new classes of caller, including AI agents acting on a user's behalf, are authorized, without weakening the guarantees customers depend on Drive large, multi-quarter projects that cut across team boundaries, from design and implementation through deployment and iteration Build alignment on the design with engineers and leaders in other teams before the c

Altana is the network for trusted trade. Our AI-powered product network empowers governments and businesses to build a more resilient and secure global economy while keeping trade flowing. The Opportunity at Altana The Engineering team is responsible for building out the product for bringing this vision to life. We are creating a platform fundamentally driven by AI, which scales to a massive trove of data, and a diverse customer base; it is a complex system that will stretch engineering in many directions. Shipping products that customers actually adopt, not just products that ship, takes a particular kind of engineering practice. It means starting inside the customer’s workflow rather than at the ticket. It means treating every release as a hypothesis you can prove or disprove. It means reaching for AI as a primary building block, not a feature you bolt on at the end. And it means owning a product end‑to‑end, from the first conversation through the telemetry six months later. As a Staff Engineer at Altana, that’s the work and you’ll lead others doing it. You’ll embed with product and design, get on calls with users, form hypotheses about where the real pain is, and lead a small team turning those hypotheses into shipped, adopted products. You’ll measure your work in customer outcomes, not commits. You Will Spend real time with customers. Sit alongside them in their workflows, watch where they get stuck, and translate what you learn into product bets your team is willing to ship behind. Partner with the product team to decide what to build, not just how . Form hypotheses about customer value, design the smallest experiment that could prove them out, and learn fast. Push back on briefs that aren’t grounded in evidence. Take new product surfaces from 0 to 1. Pitch, prototype, ship, and drive adoption with real users. You are as fluent in “did this land?” as you are in “is this maintainable?” Build AI‑native by default . LLMs, agents, evals, re
Altana is the network for trusted trade. Our AI-powered product network empowers governments and businesses to build a more resilient and secure global economy while keeping trade flowing. The Opportunity at Altana We're looking for a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead the AI behind Altana Nexus, our agentic platform for global trade. You'll work on a continuous stream of public and proprietary trade data (shipments, customs filings, trade documents), and build the models and AI agents that turn it into real-time decisions on risk, compliance and enforcement for governments and the world's largest companies. Your Responsibilities Drive the technical direction for agentic systems. Define the architecture and roadmap for the models and agentic systems that process trade data as it arrives (shipments, customs declarations, invoices, bills of lading) and turn it into risk, classification and compliance decisions in real time. Build the pipeline from ingestion to decision. Lead the design of reliable, cost-efficient systems for ingestion, document understanding, entity resolution, inference and routing across models, at the scale of global trade. Adapt models to trade. Use analyst feedback, production outcomes and agent traces to fine-tune and post-train models (SFT, DPO, RL with domain graders) where it measurably beats prompting, and keep every model improving over time. Design the observability and feedback stack. Build the evals, tracing and feedback loops that decide what ships and catch regressions in production. Lead beyond your team. Mentor senior engineers, raise the technical bar across Engineering, and help shape how we hire and level ML talent. Shape the product and the business. Work with software engineers, data scientists, product managers and customers to generate new business ideas and turn ambiguous problems into shipped capabilities. About You BS/MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent experi
