POSITION SUMMARY Natera is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to set technical direction for, and hands-on build of, the Vector Store GenAI Platform that powers document intelligence and retrieval across our Real-World Data (RWD) organization. The platform ingests clinical documents from multiple sources, indexes them for high-quality search, and makes that content available to downstream AI workflows and business use cases across oncology and other clinical domains. This is a principal-level individual contributor role with architecture-plus-build ownership of retrieval, document processing, and ingestion systems. You will define platform strategy and sequencing, ship production code in a cloud environment, raise the reliability and quality of search and retrieval, and prove new approaches through POCs and benchmarks. You will partner with clinical, engineering, and product leaders to turn ambiguous priorities into a clear technical roadmap, establish standards for how retrieval serves agents and re-extraction workflows, and deliver measurable improvements in platform quality and operability—with high autonomy and limited day-to-day direction. The ideal candidate combines deep hands-on engineering with a track record of owning complex AI platforms end to end. You set direction, implement critical path yourself, and elevate the technical bar across the teams that consume and extend the platform. RESPONSIBILITIES Own platform architecture and hands-on delivery for the Vector Store GenAI Platform, including search and retrieval, document processing and chunking, ingestion pipelines, and APIs that serve downstream AI workflows. Set technical direction for hybrid search and retrieval quality; evaluate embedding models and retrieval approaches through working implementations, POCs, and benchmarks, and drive adoption of what works in production. Advance document parsing and chunking so clinical content is indexed in a way that supports accurate, structured, and faceted retri

Altana is the network for trusted trade. Our AI-powered product network empowers governments and businesses to build a more resilient and secure global economy while keeping trade flowing. The Opportunity at Altana The Engineering team is responsible for building out the product for bringing this vision to life. We are creating a platform fundamentally driven by AI, which scales to a massive trove of data, and a diverse customer base; it is a complex system that will stretch engineering in many directions. Shipping products that customers actually adopt, not just products that ship, takes a particular kind of engineering practice. It means starting inside the customer’s workflow rather than at the ticket. It means treating every release as a hypothesis you can prove or disprove. It means reaching for AI as a primary building block, not a feature you bolt on at the end. And it means owning a product end‑to‑end, from the first conversation through the telemetry six months later. As a Staff Engineer at Altana, that’s the work and you’ll lead others doing it. You’ll embed with product and design, get on calls with users, form hypotheses about where the real pain is, and lead a small team turning those hypotheses into shipped, adopted products. You’ll measure your work in customer outcomes, not commits. You Will Spend real time with customers. Sit alongside them in their workflows, watch where they get stuck, and translate what you learn into product bets your team is willing to ship behind. Partner with the product team to decide what to build, not just how . Form hypotheses about customer value, design the smallest experiment that could prove them out, and learn fast. Push back on briefs that aren’t grounded in evidence. Take new product surfaces from 0 to 1. Pitch, prototype, ship, and drive adoption with real users. You'll embed with product and design, make the day-to-day product and technical calls, and turn hypotheses about where the real pain is into shipped, adopted products. This is an engineering role first: leading the team adds to your own engineering leverage rather than replacing it.
